Second part of the Tennis for Seniors project has begun

After the successful completion of the first part of the activities of the Tennis for Seniors project, co-funded by the EU through the Erasmus+ Sport programme (carried out from 11 July to 11 October 2020), the second part of the project began on 13 June this year – a continuation of the previously conducted activities.

Unlike the first part, when participants were also "beginners" in recreational tennis, in the second part participants continue to improve their skills at a somewhat more demanding ("advanced") level.

Despite many obstacles and delays, whether due to epidemiological measures or the earthquakes in Zagreb and Petrinja, the project has nevertheless continued successfully with good participant turnout.

The end of the first part of the project activities was symbolically celebrated on Erasmus Days, on 17 October, with the awarding of certificates and a get-together. The end of the second part of the project will be marked in a similar way, hopefully without another shutdown due to the pandemic.

Since, besides TK Chromos, partners from four countries participate in the project (Dejan Malić Tennis Academy from Germany, KLC Tennisschule Skugor from Austria, TK Domžale from Slovenia, and Udruga građana Tenis klub Međugorje from BiH), due to different epidemiological measures it was not possible to carry out the planned activities continuously or to the full extent as originally envisioned, but a good portion of them was nevertheless carried out.

We are pleased that the second part of the activities has also sparked the interest of participants and that, so far, the activities are being successfully carried out. We hope this will continue and that in the autumn we will be able to organise the awarding of certificates to all participants at a joint gathering of all the partners!

As a reminder, these are the main goals of the project activities:

  • Getting acquainted with the basics of all strokes, improving technique, applying tactical principles in match situations.
  • Getting acquainted with the rules, scoring, and positioning in singles and doubles play.
  • Learning about the participants' eating habits and their impact on healthier nutrition, as well as advice on additional vitamin and mineral intake.
  • Developing and fostering friendship and camaraderie within the club through additional activities unrelated to tennis - card games, chess, barbecues.
  • Cardio tennis – tennis drills adapted to the participants' physical condition – for more advanced participants only.

Tennis is a safe, non-contact sport that can be applied and adjusted according to the age and physical abilities of participants. It has a positive effect on aerobic capacity, balance, reaction speed, resting heart rate, and blood pressure. Through learning and play, we also influence mental sharpness and activity, and help participants avoid social isolation.
